Attention Israel!(the people of God)
God, our God! God the one and only! Love God, your God, with your whole heart; love him with all that’s in you, love him with all you’ve got! Write these commandments that I’ve given you today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children. Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when you fall into bed at night. Tie them on your hands and foreheads as a reminder; inscribe them on the doorposts of your homes and on your city gates.
(Deuteronomy 6:4-9 MSG)
The above passage of Scripture is a very important passage in Judaism. Many Jews to this very day recite these words in their prayers, it is referred to as the Shema.(probably not the MSG translation, but you know what I mean).
Read these words for yourself. I would even say pray these words. When you’re reading these words and praying these words, you can’t help but see how important the Word of God was to the Jews, and how important God thought His Word was for His people. God’s point is plain: ‘Let my Word be constantly in your mind, constantly in your heart, and constantly in your mouth. Learn my Word, teach my Word, know My Word.‘
As I contemplate these truths I can’t help but be reminded of Christ Himself. As He Himself tells us the Scriptures are about Him:
You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me…
(John 5:39 ESV)
The Scriptures testify about Jesus, they point us to Him.(See also Luke 24:27) John 1 tells us that the Word of God is Christ Himself. Keep Christ in your mind, contemplate Him often. Learn about Him, tell others about Him, seek to know Him. Pray these words from Deuteronomy, pray them often. Reflect on the commands of God, even on the Old Testament Laws that were given to the Jews(The immediate context of this passage)…but even more so be reminded of and reflect on the One whom these Laws and these beautiful Words are pointing us to.
